Elephant calf to make Pgh. zoo debut soon
PITTSBURGH — A newborn African elephant could make her public debut at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium soon, and a second elephant is set to give birth any day now.
The female calf was born Wednesday to 26-year-old Savannah, an African elephant. If she continues to adjust to her surroundings, the calf could go on public display Saturday or Sunday.
Moja, another elephant at the zoo, is expecting any day. Zoo president Barbara Baker says Moja has set a record for the longest pregnancy by a captive elephant at 673 days — and counting.
Both elephants mated with the zoo's bull elephant, Jackson.
Staff will observe how well Savannah and other elephants in the herd bond with the newborn before displaying her.
