Signs your dog needs a dental examination
Keeping up with your dog’s dental health is an integral part of his well-being. The American Kennel Club reveals the top signs that mean it’s time to take your dog to the dentist.
• Dog breath: Many believe dogs automatically have bad breath, but that’s simply not true. When your dog’s breath smells foul, it is likely that plaque and tartar have accumulated on his teeth, and if the teeth aren’t brushed regularly, the bacteria gets caught below the gum line and causes bad breath. The foul odor can be a sign of periodontal disease.
• Broken teeth: Dogs innately love to chew, and sometimes the things they chew on can actually break their teeth. When a tooth breaks and exposes a nerve, it can be very painful and needs to be treated by a professional.
• Loose teeth: After a puppy loses his baby teeth, the adult teeth should not move. If they do, it could mean a number of things, such as a fractured root or a disease causing poor bone support. Whatever the underlying cause may be, a trip to the veterinary dentist is in order.
