LED lights to replace current bulbs used in city tier garage

They're expected to last longer

Butler’s tier parking garage is set to have a bright future.

The city parking authority announced at its meeting Tuesday that it will replace the high pressure sodium light bulbs in the tier garage with LED lights.

The cost to replace the 211 bulbs is about $120,600.

Authority treasurer Jeff Smith said he expects the project can be paid for using money in a bank account with BNY Mellon. The account has about $196,000 and the money can only be spent on capital improvements.

The LED lights use a fraction of the electricity as the current bulbs and will last 10 years running 24 hours per day. The garage’s current bulbs last about four years.

The bulbs offer consistent reliability, unlike the current bulbs. Chairman Jim Chiprean said the garage has about 30 bulbs in need of replacement.

“Every year we replace 20 bulbs,” he said.

The authority used the Keystone Purchasing Network, a job order contractor service, to award the bid. Sunrise Electrical Services of Harmony will be the contractor for the project.

The contractor will install one new bulb as a test before the end of the month to make sure it is suitable for the garage.

There is no timetable for when work to replace all the bulbs will begin.

Also at the meeting, Smith proposed changing the name of the garage.

The garage has the name Morgan Washington Centre beside its West Cunningham Street entrance, although it is no longer the name of the structure.

Smith proposed naming the building after Chiprean’s grandfather, John Chiprean, who was the first chairman of the parking authority.

The authority approved a motion to allow Smith to explore how much it would cost to replace the letters on the outside of the structure.
