Parking passes issued after app fails

Some tickets issued in error

For the Butler Parking Authority, it’s out with the new and in with the old due to a malfunctioning electronic parking permit system.

The parking authority on Friday issued paper passes for vehicles using the tier garage along South Washington Street and the South McKean Street deck.

Jeff Smith, authority treasurer, said some people were erroneously issued parking tickets since the Pango Mobile Parking system was implemented last month.

“There’s just been some IT issues with their software,” Smith said.

The number of invalid parking tickets given out was unavailable.

Smith said the company mainly has experience with street parking, not parking garages or lots.

According to an Oct. 10 letter signed by authority Chairman Jim Chiprean that was sent to permit holders, the Pango system will be working again in November. Chiprean was unavailable for comment.

The letter states permit users will be able to buy November parking passes as well.

Motorists were able to register for the system using the authority’s smart phone app or a desk top computer.
