No surprises in arena for naming of new justice

Is it at all confusing or surprising that the political party with the legal opportunity to appoint a new justice would do so? Is it surprising that the other party would object? Of course not. And no matter what any of them claim or say, this is politics and it is the way the game is played.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the ultimate liberal justice and very strongly helped steer the court to the left during her decades on the bench. She should be admired and praised for the job she did. Her positions were exactly the reason she was appointed to the highest court by a Democratic president.

Her stubbornness to stay on the bench may have been the primary reason that the current president is able to change the composition of the court for years to come.

Knowing she was nearing the end of her life expectancy and having health problems, she could have and maybe should have stepped down during the Obama years.

If she had, there would have been screaming from the right to wait until after the next president was elected to appoint her successor, but it would have been ignored just as the left’s cries will be ignored now.

The proposed new judge has much to offer but also has issues that will change some previous decisions. They may or may not include abortion positions. They may or may not include Obamacare. Time will tell. But as a judge she will have the opportunity to create her own history.

She isn’t being appointed to write new laws. She is only appointed to interpret existing law and to make certain it is followed. She could have an agenda, but who doesn’t? She may have flaws, but who doesn’t?

She has an outstanding pedigree unless you have an individual bias against her education and experience. She has an amazing family including adopted and special needs children.

The nay-sayers are predicting she will be swayed by religious convictions. The world would be a much better place if we would all be swayed by religious convictions, but of course our convictions vary and hers may not match yours.

We trust she is going to be a solid judge based on her education and background. Her age is a plus although we are supporters of term limits and that should include the Supreme Court. She lives and thrives in the same COVID-19 world as the rest of us and will better understand our world than an 80-year-old man or woman.

Next time a Democrat is given the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, I feel certain they will act decisively to move the court back to the left, and well they should. But this year isn’t their opportunity. The court will move to the right, and it will do so regardless of who wins the Presidential race. May God grant the newest member of the Supreme Court wisdom and courage to represent all Americans equally and fairly.
