BUTLER TWP — Size matters.
Buoyed by a big line on both sides of the ball— led by 6-foot-1, 340-pound senior Brian Matthews and 6-2, 325-pound Joey Keefer — Hollidaysburg powered its way to a 33-6 football victory over Butler on Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.
The loss prevented the Golden Tornado (3-1) from beginning a season with four straight wins for the first time since 1992. Instead, it was the Golden Tigers who got off to the 4-0 start.
“They have that record for a reason,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “Those (linemen) aren’t just big, they’re athletic. We went back and forth with them early, but eventually they took control of the line of scrimmage.”
Hollidaysburg rushed for 314 yards in the contest while the Tornado managed just 40 net yards on the ground. Butler quarterback Nicco Baggetta threw for 148 yards but was repeatedly forced from the pocket in completing just 10 of 28 throws.
“Their quarterback did a good job of escaping pressure and making plays,” Tigers coach Homer Delattre said. “Eric is doing a great job here. That program is coming along, no doubt about that.”
Butler entered the game averaging 39 points per game, but its offense was shut out on this night. The Tornado’s lone score was a 79-yard kickoff return by Deacon Simko following a Hollidaysburg touchdown in the third quarter.
The Golden Tigers responded to that score by marching 65 yards in 16 plays for a touchdown, eating more than nine minutes off the clock.
“We usually rush for that many yards (300) or close to it,” Delattre said. “Our line has been very consistent and hasn’t been making mistakes. That showed tonight.
“We saw that Butler was going for its first 4-0 start in years. We knew the atmosphere would be electric tonight, the student body and band would be all revved up. ... We wanted to spoil their momentum tonight.”
Hollidaysburg used a big play to set up each of its first four touchdowns. Cole Delattre’s 46-yard completion to Ethan Coke on a seam route set up Josh Banks for a 3-yard touchdown run to open the scoring midway through the first quarter.
Delattre’s runs of 29, 40 and 49 yards set up the Tigers’ next three scores. He ran for 165 yards overall and a touchdown of his own after entering the game with 196 yards and five TDs.
“Our quarterback ran well tonight,” Coach Delatttre said. “He read the plays and found the holes.”
Tyson Pino had an interception for Butler, and Marcus Vicari caught four passes for 79 yards. The Tornado’s leading rusher this season, Mark Klemz, was held to 13 yards and did not get a carry in the second half.
Kayden McCrystal had two interceptions for Hollidaysburg, the latter setting up field position for the Tigers’ final scoring drive of the first half.
Butler lost its starting tight end, sophomore Chase Boden, to a broken arm during practice this week.
“We had to move some people around tonight, but I think we got out of this OK injury-wise,” Christy said. “Our kids won’t hang their heads over this. We’ll look at the film, evaluate and move on.”
Butler did have two players gain more than 100 yards on special teams. Nash Cuffman tallied 109 on five returns while Simko had 105 on three returns.
The Tornado continue their stretch of home games next Friday, hosting City League power Westinghouse.
“Another challenge for us, to be sure,” Christy said.
