High school sports roundup: North Catholic cross country, led by Jack Steinemann and Anna Morris, has big day

North Catholic cross country topped all Butler County teams in Saturday’s Red, White and Blue Classic in White Oak Park, Allegheny County. The boys finished fifth in Class 2A with 192 points and the top two individual times; the girls finished second with 62 points and two top-10 finishes.

Jack Steineman won the boys 2A race in 15:32.90, with Tyler Carroll 10 seconds behind in second.

The Trojanettes’ Anna Morris led the way with a seventh-place finish in 19:38.60, while senior Madeline Meeuf came in ninth with a time of 19:42.20.

Knoch’s Carter French led the Knights boys, who finished seventh in the 2A team standings, with a sixth-place finish in 16:13.20. Grady Robb was 24th in 17:00.10.

David Kristine’s 16:47.50 placed him 19th, the top time for Freeport boys, which finished 15th.

Natalie Zolinas was the top Knoch girls runner, finishing 18th in 20:11.90.

In 3A boys, Seneca Valley finished 11th, with Riley McGee running the top time of 16:50.30 to finish 36th. Colton Rearick was the top Mars runner with a 16:54.60 in 41st.

In 3A girls, Seneca Valley finished 20th and was led by Elyse Cilik (88th, 21:26.7). Hailey Long was the top Mars runner with a 19:36.80 for 28th.

Boys soccer

Wade Freehling scored three goals and dished out an assist in Slippery Rock’s 4-0 win over Mercyhurst Prep.

Ryan Strother added the fourth goal, plus an assist. Parker Wilhide recorded a shutout in goal.

North Catholic 1, Erie Cathedral Prep 1 (2OT) — Austin English scored the Trojans’ lone goal on an assist from Brody Kennedy.

Girls soccer

CeCe Schlegel scored twice, and Camryn Woods added a goal and two assists in Freeport’s 4-0 win over North Hills.

Ella McConville also scored, and Alyssa Alcorn was in net for the shutout.

Girls volleyball

Butler won the Shaler Tournament on Saturday over 14 other teams. No stats were provided.

Football

Summit Academy fell to 0-4 after Saturday’s 43-16 loss to Freedom Area. Quarterback Syamir Newkirk was 11 of 22 for 87 yards, two touchdowns (to Demetris Crosby and Alonzo Washington) and an interception.

North Catholic 65, Blackhawk 49 — Some stats submitted Saturday from the Trojans’ win: Joe Felitsky was a perfect 11 of 11 for 235 yards and four touchdowns, plus a pair of two-point conversions through the air; Logan Schade ran 20 times for 344 yards and four touchdowns; and Will Waskiewicz caught two passes for 104 yards and a TD.
