Another season's over; maybe next year it'll be better

The game’s hype has gotten bigger than the game itself, but we all still watch it even if there are no parties.

Sunday’s Super Bowl was interesting as we all watched to see when Kansas City would mount their fantastic comeback. We are still waiting, and Tom Brady (every Steelers fan’s worst nightmare) is still smiling.

Who was the feature halftime performer? Never saw or heard of him before, but he kept all his clothes on, unlike the streaker who was actually advertising for a pornography site, Janet Jackson who conveniently had the famous wardrobe malfunction and, of course, the woman who performed God Bless America more exposed than clothed. His performance wasn’t enough to distract anyone from any other halftime activity that was available.

The non-football play highlight of the game was the appearance of the Tampa Bay coach’s 95-year-old mother in attendance at the game. Her 68-year-old son made her proud again, and you had to wonder if she still wants to argue with rival fans who might criticize her “boy,” like so many of us do at high school games.

The duet for the National Anthem, you know that song that is for all of us, was very pleasant, although again we would ask: Who were those people? The opening singer was talented, but you have to wonder why she wasn’t asked to cover up a little.

Strangest commercial was for some insurance company that found it funny to mock harassment in the workplace. It was way too suggestive. You would wonder how that got past the network watchdogs, but they also let the Chiefs play the tomahawk chop war chant as the team came onto the field. Makes you wonder if anyone at NFL headquarters heard about the Redskins having to give up their nickname because it was offensive to Native Americans.

Most Steelers fans were probably rooting for KC because of our hatred of Brady, but that was worsened by Antonio Brown not only playing for Brady’s team, but also scoring a touchdown to close the half, which really put a dagger in the Chiefs.

We suppose there were some other high-priced commercials that people liked, even if no one remembers any of them the next day. The most interesting thing about them is always how much money is spent on them. And again, someone had the good sense to hire Joe Montana and his clean-cut image to speak well of their product, whatever the product was.

So, another season has come and gone. The Steelers were not a factor. Our friend from Cabot got to go to the game, and our blocks were not winners on the company poll. Maybe next year.

Please wear your mask, and maybe next year it won’t be necessary.
