Assistance with water bills available

The Department of Human Services opened applications for the new Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, of LIHWAP, on Monday.

Assistance is available for families who have past due water bills, had their service terminated or received a notice indicating that their service will be terminated in the next 60 days.

Households can receive LIHWAP grants for both drinking water service and wastewater service. Grants are issued directly to water service providers, and families must meet income requirements.

According to a news release from the DHS, a single-person household with an annual income under $19,320 qualifies for the grant.

The annual income limit for a two-person household is under $26,130 a year, $32,940 for a three-person, $39,750 for a four-person, $46,560 for a five-person and $53,370 for a six-person household.

Residents can visit www.compass.state.pa.us for more information or to apply for a grant through the program.
