High school sports roundup: Mars girls volleyball sweeps Shaler; Butler, Freeport boys golf win duals

Cecilia Christy powered defending WPIAL champion Mars to a 3-1 victory over Shaler with 10 kills and seven blocks Wednesday night. The Planets won by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17.

Rylee Wooldridge added 10 kills and four aces, Alyssa Genis contributed seven kills and five blocks, and Reese Hazelton knocked down seven kills. Gabi Weidemann dished out 32 assists to the bunch to go along with five aces.

Butler 3, Freeport 1 — Raina Lewandowski produced a double-double of 15 kills and 19 digs (plus two aces) in the Golden Tornado’s road win (set scores: 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-19).

Julia Mason dished out 38 assists to go along with seven digs and two aces. Brynn Cornibe recorded 13 kills, four aces and three blocks. And libero Taylor Simon had 19 kills, plus two aces and two kills.

Cranberry Area 3, Union 0 — Haley Corle tallied four kills, two digs, an assist and an ace in the Knights’ loss (25-13, 25-16, 25-20). Riley Kriebel had eight assists, and Brooke Hileman had three kills, four digs and two assists.

Seneca Valley 3, Penn-Trafford — No information was provided from this match.

Boys golf

Butler 185, Blackhawk 198 — Boden Lenyk shot a 35, tying with Blackhawk’s Joe Friedman for the lowest nine-hole round Wednesday at Blackhawk Golf Course.

Levi McClellan and Henry Bortmes followed up for the Tornado (7-2, 4-2 section) with 37s.

Seneca Valley 182, Knoch 211 — The Raiders’ Anthony Cardosi and CJ Gworek shot an even-par 35, including birdies on the first two holes, to lead the team to a win in a battle of Butler County teams at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course.

The Knights’ Jacob Jones tied with a 35, the only golfer on the team under 40. SV got a pair of 36s from Josh Marquardt and Vinci Villella.

Freeport 203, St. Joe’s 245 — Ethan Crooks shot a 4-over 39 to lead all golfers at River Forest Country Club. Carson Kane finished second in the match with a 40 as the Yellowjackets improved to 8-0 (6-0 section).

Pine-Richland 185, Mars 190 — Despite another impressive round of 33 from junior Jackson Geiger, the Planets suffered a loss at Treesdale Golf Club. Landon Mitro shot a 36 for the Planets; the Rams’ Sam Schenk shot a 34.

D10 Region 2 Mega Match — Host Slippery Rock finished fourth at Slippery Rock Golf Club with a cumulative 335, as Grove City won with a 313.

Drake Kreutz finished ninth for the Rockets with an 18-hole score of 80, and teammate Sam Smocheck shot an 82 to tie for 11th. Wilmington’s Cody Maun won with a 72.

The Rockets sit fourth in the team standings through five matches with 18 points.

Girls golf

A-C Valley/Union’s Kennedy Kinney shot 47 to finish third in the KSAC mega match No. 4 at Hi-Level Golf Course. Karns City’s Maddy Allbee shot a 48, and Moniteau’s Juliette Brown tallied a 49 to round out the match’s top five.

The Warriors’ Gabby Shearer shot a 50, and Hayden Hilliard a 52 as Moniteau had six of the top 11 golfers on the leaderboard.

Cross country

Cranberry boys 21, Karns City 38; Cranberry girls 27, Karns City 28 — The Gremlins’ Noah Wieland won the boys race with a time of 18:16, more than 30 seconds ahead of Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner.

On the girls’ side, KC’s Megan and Emma Hartle finished third and fourth; no times were provided. Cranberry’s Beatrice Kolesar won in 20:48.

Mars boys 26, Hampton 32; Hampton girls 23, Mars 32 — No individual results were provided from this dual-meet split at Hampton.
