High school sports roundup: Butler volleyball tops Cathedral Prep; Karns City soccer sweeps Punxsutawney
Junior outside hitter Raina Lewandowski dropped 23 kills on Cathedral Prep Tuesday night, helping Butler’s girls volleyball team open the season by outlasting the visiting Ramblers 3-2.
Lewandowski added 20 digs in the victory and teammate Julia Mason tallied 41 assists and five aces.
Brynn Cornibe contributed 15 kills and four blocks and Ashlan Tosadori eight kills and 14 digs. Butler won the match by set scores of 25-11, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10.
Slippery Rock 3, Conneaut 2 — Adi Novad’s 11 kills and Lexi Caldwell’s 32 assists helped pull the Rockets through in this road match.
Molly Smochek had eight blocks for Slippery Rock, which won by scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13.
Moniteau 3, Forest Area 0 — Danilynn Wallace had eight kills and five aces for the Warriors in this 25-23, 25-14, 25-15 victory.
Emily Matz tallied five kills and three aces, Alyssa Thompson three kills and three aces.
Titusville 3, A-C Valley 1 — The Falcons dropped this match to the Rockets by scores of 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19.
Malia Page had 13 kills in defeat, Maddy Dehart 12 kills, five aces and four blocks. Alexia Altman dished out 23 assists and served up seven aces.
Owen Eastgate scored twice in Seneca Valley’s 4-1 win against Upper St. Clair.
Ben Baronner and Zach White both added a goal for the Raiders.
Karns City 4, Punxsutawney 2 — The Gremlins trailed the Chucks 2-0 in the first half, but Mason Bell’s goal on a free kick from 30 yards sparked KC’s rally.
Colton Christie later scored on a penalty kick. Josh Peters and Logan Rumbaugh also found the net for the Gremlins.
Brock Dittman made 12 saves in the win.
A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp continued his dominant season by carding a 33 Tuesday at Foxburg Country Club, placing first out of 66 golfers.
Colton Christie paced Karns City with a 40. Moniteau’s Brennan Kelly fired a 41 to lead the Warriors to a second-place tie out of 11 teams with 217 strokes.
Keystone finished first with 203 strokes.
Butler 185, Knoch 208 — The bottom score for Butler’s top five at Butler Country Club was a solid 38 from Levi McClellan and Anthony Trombatt.
The Golden Tornado (6-2) also received a pair of 36s from Jase Renwick and Boden Lenyk and a 37 courtesy of Henry Bortmes.
For Knoch, Jacob Jones carded a 38.
Mars 199, Shenango 241 — Lukas Singh (37) and Jackson Geiger (38) led this win at Butler Country Club.
North Catholic 189, Quaker Valley 199 — Colin Glass carded a 35 for the Trojans at Pheasant Ridge.
Bree O'Donnell scored four goals while Hanna Dailey added two goals and two assists in Karns City’s 8-0 victory over Punxsutawney.
Phoebe Brandon had four assists for the Gremlins.
Gianna Kampian, Gracie McCarty and Grace McMichael swept the singles matches for Mars as the Planets blanked Hampton 5-0.
Winning in doubles play were Grace Nam/Elaina Riegler and Lacey Kern/Madison Cawley.
At Pheasant Ridge Golf Club, North Catholic defeated Beaver 183-228 behind Riley Kontul’s 42.
Shaler 209, Butler 213 — The Golden Tornado fell to the Titans at Suncrest Golf Course. Rylee Gage shot a 44 to lead Butler.
Mars 186, Seneca Valley 202 — Makenna Myler’s 44 highlighted the Planets’ effort.
