High school sports roundup: Mars girls volleyball wins opener; Butler girls soccer falls to Mt. Lebanon

Cecilia Christy and Rylee Wooldridge each had 10 kills, with Christy blocking three attacks on defense, to lead Mars girls volleyball to a 3-0 sweep of Armstrong in Monday’s season opener.

The Planets won by set scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-10. Gaib Weidemann had 26 assists, and Natalie Janusz had eight kills.

Union 3, Tidioute Charter 0 — The Damsels earned a sweep by scores of 25-17, 25-11, 25-21.

Brooke Hileman tallied six kills, seven aces and eight digs in the win while Riley Kriebel added 16 assists and four aces.

Adrianna Kriebel contributed five kills, seven digs and four aces.

Girls Soccer

Mackenzie Powell, Liv Halliday and Maeve O’Leary each scored a goal in Mars’ 3-0 win over Yough. The Planets improved to 3-0 with the victory.

Freeport 8, Indiana 0 — Scoring twice for the Yellowjackets were Nia DiSanti and Peyton Los. Alyssa Alcorn earned the shutout in net.

Mt. Lebanon 3, Butler 1 — Ava Soley scored for the Golden Tornado in their season opener.

Boys golf

Five Mars players each managed a score in the 30s as the Planets topped Seneca Valley 186-203 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

Jackson Geiger and Jack Weaver both fired a 36, Lukas Singh a 37, Jaxon Hittle 38 and Finn McKenzie 39.

For the Raiders, Marcos Lopez carded 38 and Josh Marquardt 39.

Freeport 200, Valley 254 — The Yellowjackets (7-0, 5-0) continued to roll with this victory at Buffalo Golf Course.

Ethan Crooks led the way with a 36, Aiden Bauman added a 37 and Carson Kane a 40.

Girls golf

Elise Wadas shot a 38 for Mars, but the Planets dropped a 183-187 decision to Bethel Park at Suncrest Golf Course.

Pine-Richland 175, Seneca Valley 191 — The Raiders dropped this match at Connoquenessing Country Club. No other details were available.

Girls tennis

Pine-Richland 3, Mars 2 — Gianna Kampian won her No. 1 singles matchup 6-1, 6-1, and the Planets’ top doubles pair won 6-4, 6-3.

Butler vs. Seneca Valley postponed — Rain postponed the conclusion of this match. The Tornado won the first set in four of their matches, according to head coach Conlan Walsh.
