High school sports roundup: North Catholic has big day at county cross country meet

North Catholic’s Madeline Meeuf (20:34.79), Tessa Driehorst (20:53.48), Anna Morris (20:59.90) and Caroline Sell (21:03.79) took the top four places of the girls’ side at Saturday’s Butler County 5K Fall Classic cross country meet at Seneca Valley.

With a time of 21:11.96, Slippery Rock’s Leah Perez took fifth. The Trojanettes’ Sydney Dunn (21:22.95) and Ava Sparacino (21:32.14) rounded out the top 7. Elise Cilik (8th, 21:45.86) had Seneca Valley’s best time; while Freeport’s Elizabeth Wesolosky (21st, 23:08.68), Moniteau’s Alexis Kirschner (23rd, 23:34.39) and Karns City’s Megan Hartle (27th, 23:55.54) led their teams.

— On the boys’ side, North Catholic’s Tyler Carroll (16:29.62) and Jack Steineman (16:45.03) finished 1-2. Freeport’s David Kristine (3rd, 17:07.02), Seneca Valley’s Riley McGee (4th, 17:14.93), Karns City’s Noah Weiland (5th, 18:20.65) and Slippery Rock’s Hunter Doerflinger (6th, 18:28.71).

— Butler junior Brendan Eicher finished 11th in the 5,000-meter finals at the HOKA Showcase Invitational at Ohio’s Riverside High School on Saturday night.

Junior Brendan Eicher (11th, 16:03.20) and seniors Ethan Thomas (15th, 16:10.66) and Logan Rogers (43rd, 16:49.31) medaled for the Golden Tornado, whose boys finished sixth at the meet. Zari Golojuh (65th, 20:27.53) was the best finisher for Butler’s girls, who placed 20th.

Boys soccer

Spencer Valasek notched a hat trick and Conor Rumbaugh and Carson Rowley also scored goals as Freeport downed Jeanette 5-0 on Saturday.

Henry Good had a pair of saves for the Yellowjackets (1-0) in the shutout. Freeport visits Shady Side Academy on Tuesday.

Fairview 4, Mars 1 — The Planets (1-1) suffered their first loss of the young season. They welcome in Hampton on Tuesday.

Girls soccer

Liv Halliday netted a pair of Mars and Miley Gratton added another to give the Planets a 3-0 win over Kiski on Saturday. Mars (2-0) will host Yough on Monday.

DuBois 5, Karns City 2 — Aubrey Price’s two goals weren’t enough for the Gremlins (1-1), who play Punxsutawney at home on Tuesday.

Girls tennis

Evelyn Marche, Macaria Stall and Anna Ravotti had singles wins as North Catholic downed Mars 4-1 on Friday. Claire Elliott and Kaitlyn Abel had a doubles victory for the Trojanettes, while Elaina Riegler and Grace Nam paired up to win one for the Planets.
