BUFFALO TWP — Amos Glenn’s message to himself entering the second half of Freeport football’s season-opening game Friday against Indiana was short and to the point.

“Make the most of your opportunities,” he said following the game.

Opportunity knocked in the form of the second half kickoff, which Glenn fielded on the right hash, then ran diagonally toward the opposite sideline and raced by his own bench for an 88-yard touchdown.

The effort spurred a dominating third quarter in which the heavily favored Yellowjackets scored four touchdowns in a 28-0 shutout of the Little Indians at Freeport Stadium.

“I made the first guy miss and knew I was gone,” Glenn said. “I couldn’t have done it without my blockers.”

The play came after a frustrating first half that saw Freeport, loaded with offensive talent, gain just 86 yards. They reached Indiana’s 15 midway through the second quarter, but a shotgun snap sailed by quarterback Drew Ross and led to a 14-yard loss. Three plays later, Judah Thompson’s 43-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

“Drew said that play was on him, said he just took his eyes off the ball,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “It was first-game jitters and those things happen. Indiana was stout coming out and defensively, we just wanted to limit them.”

The Indians had success running the ball early, especially on keepers with quarterback Jason Strack. But Freeport’s defense stiffened and had allowed just 80 total yards by halftime.

Indiana missed its chance to take control of the game and it was put on its heels in the third quarter.

Just moments after Glenn’s kickoff return, Dawson Gaillot intercepted Strack’s pass on third down and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.

Ross and Glenn both rushed for scores later in the period. The Yellowjackets had put 28 points on the board in less than nine minutes.

Glenn finished the game with 209 all-purpose yards.

“He’s so dynamic,” Coach Gaillot said. “It’s like two moves and he’s gone.”

The Indians threatened to avoid the shutout late, but Strack’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Madden Wisniewski with just over a minute left.

Indiana coach Mark Zilinskas previously coached the team through 2015. He returned this year to help revive a struggling program which won just once in 2024.

“Freeport did not beat us up and down the field tonight,” he said. “It was big plays that got us and we had a few breakdowns. There’s something to build on here.”

Freeport will host Derry next Friday.
