More options, closer to home

In the Thursday, Aug. 21, edition of the Butler Eagle, we reported that more and more surgical procedures are happening at UPMC Passavant’s Cranberry Township campus.

According to hospital officials, the number of procedures performed at the Cranberry location is inching its way up. In 2023, the campus performed 3,203 procedures. This year, the hospital system anticipates reaching 3,400 procedures in Cranberry by the end of the year. So far, 1,982 procedures have been performed during 2025.

Independence Health System’s Butler Memorial Hospital similarly benefits Butler County.

The presence of both health systems with hospitals that can offer care closer to home for Butler County residents is a win for the community.

“We find that traveling to Pittsburgh can be a challenge,” vice president of operations Zachary Lenhart said in his interview with Eagle staff writer Hunter Muro. “Once you cross those rivers, people get a little crazy. So we’re trying to keep folks as close to home as possible — whether in the North Hills, Butler or Beaver — by providing advanced technologies here.”

It’s true. While we here in Butler County are situated close enough to often enjoy the opportunities Pittsburgh provides — entertainment, jobs, a bustling urban setting — traveling for health care creates challenges. It takes more time to travel to Pittsburgh for everyone and some may need transportation.

It’s great to see this type of growth and investment in Butler County. Having close-to-home health care options improves quality of life for all of us.
