Navy’s new ship breaks downNORFOLK — The U.S. Navy’s newest ship had to be towed to a base in Virginia after breaking down during its journey to its home port in California.The USS Milwaukee, a combat ship that was commissioned in November, was towed more than 40 nautical miles to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek after suffering an engineering casualty on Friday, The Navy Times reported.The ship was on its way from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Fla., where it was planning to stop before continuing on its trek to its port in San Diego.The cause of the failure remains under investigation, but officials say it appears that metal debris collected in the lube oil filer, causing the system to shut down. The problems began soon after the ship left Halifax and officials dropped anchor while engineers worked on the system.A salvage ship eventually met up with the Milwaukee and towed it to the Virginia base.

Vandals spray paint California mosquesHAWTHORNE, Calif. — Vandals spray painted graffiti at two mosques in the southern California city of Hawthorne and left a device that looked like a hand grenade in the driveway of one of the mosques, prompting police to investigate both incidents as a hate crime.A bomb squad was called, and the area around the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Baitus-Salaam Mosque was evacuated after the device was discovered around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, police said in a statement. Investigators determined the device was a plastic replica of a hand grenade. The word “Jesus” was sprayed in white paint on the mosque’s fence.Police received another call that the phrase “Jesus is the way” was spray-painted in front of the Islamic Center of Hawthorne.Police and the FBI were investigating the vandalism, which appeared to have occurred overnight, as hate crimes.“This type of behavior is born out of ignorance and fear and we as members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community ... we respond with peaceful dialogue,” said Ahsan Khan, a chapter president of the community.“It’s through peaceful dialogue that we can hopefully see less of this type of hate crime,” he said.

Another storm brings more rain SAN FRANCISCO — A third winter-like storm in a week brought rain and strong winds to much of northern California and snow to the Sierra Nevada during the weekend.Sheets of pouring rain made for treacherous driving on Sunday. One person was injured in an accident on Highway 101 that blocked all lanes near San Rafael, north of San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said.Showers and thunderstorms happened throughout the day, and officials reminded residents to drive slowly, saying there was debris and flooding on the freeways.After a lull Saturday, the system moved into parched California on Sunday packing precipitation, strong winds, lightning and hail. The latest storm dumped slightly less rain than the previous systems.The National Weather Service issued a strong wind advisory for the San Francisco Bay Area that stayed in effect through Sunday night. Winds delayed arriving and departing flights at the Oakland and San Francisco International airports, officials said.
