Sestak will again challenge Toomey

HARRISBURG — Democrat and former Navy Vice Admiral Joe Sestak says he’ll seek a rematch with U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey in the 2016 election.

Sestak said in a campaign e-mail that he’ll make the announcement Wednesday at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Sestak ran for the office in 2010 and lost narrowly in the general election to Toomey. Sestak had already beaten then-U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the primary after Specter switched his party affiliation from Republican.

The 63-year-old Sestak served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives representing a suburban Philadelphia district.

Toomey is a former investment banker who served three terms in the U.S House.

Paramedic killed at crash site

JOHNSTOWN — A paramedic responding to a crash was struck and killed at by a coal truck.

Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said the female paramedic from West End Ambulance Services in Johnstown was killed Monday on Route 271. Emergency crews said there were at least three separate crashes, apparently related to icy conditions, on the highway in Upper Yoder Township, which borders Johnstown.

The paramedic was responding to one of the crashes when she was reportedly hit by the truck, which also crashed as it drove toward the other crash scenes.

Police use Taser on PSU student

STATE COLLEGE — Police in State College said they’ve used a Taser for the first time. The stun gun was used to subdue a female Penn State student who was allegedly involved in a disturbance at a McDonald’s restaurant about 2:40 a.m. Saturday.

State College and Penn State police had announced Tuesday that they were equipping their officers with the stun guns.

Online court records indicate the student, 22-year-old Ciarah Bishop, of Philadelphia, remained in jail Monday.

Police charged her with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and other crimes because they say she refused to leave and punched an officer.
