DETROIT — General Motors is recalling 51,640 SUVs because the fuel gauges may show inaccurate readings.

The recall involves the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia from the 2014 model year. All of the affected SUVs were built between March 26 and Aug. 15 of 2013.

GM said the engine control module software may cause the fuel gauge to read inaccurately. If that happens, the vehicle might run out of fuel and stall without warning.

The company doesn't know of any crashes or injuries related to the problem.

GM said dealers will reprogram the software for free, starting immediately. The company will also notify owners by mail.

MONACA — Zinc production has shut down at a site where Shell Oil is considering building a petrochemical plant. Horsehead Holding Corp. had announced last fall that it intended to close the smelter in Beaver County.A Pittsburgh newspaper reported that the company said Friday that production halted on Wednesday, leaving only 40 of the original 510 workers to help with the final closure.Shell held public meetings last month on the proposed “cracker” plant, which would convert ethane from natural gas into chemicals for plastics, antifreeze and other products. The company is paying for demolition on the Horsehead site. Shell officials said they are in the third and final stage of consideration of the petrochemical project.

PITTSBURGH — U.S. Steel is laying off an undisclosed number of Pittsburgh employees to cut costs.The steelmaker said in a Friday statement that there will be layoffs there and in other locations.A U.S. Steel spokesman said the layoffs involve employees in operations and business support functions. The company has about 5,000 employees in the Pittsburgh area and about 37,000 worldwide.
