It is with much sadness that the family of Arthur W. Bishop Jr. of Chicora announce his passing at 9 p.m. Friday at his home after an extended illness.

Art was born in Jackson Center, Mercer County, on Feb. 8, 1926, and was a son of the late Arthur W. Bishop Sr. and Hannah E. West Bishop.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Dunlap Bishop; three daughters, Linda Trainer-Miller and her husband, Gene, of Las Cruces, N.M.; Pamela Fennell and her husband, Doug, of Chicora, and Beth McConnell and her husband, Matt, of Rockaway, N.J.; five grandchildren, Gerald Trainer and his wife, Jenny, Meredith Deal and her husband, Larry, Megan Moore and her husband, Carl, Alex McConnell, and Madyson McConnell; four great-grandchildren, Eric Trainer, Rhyan Deal, Maddox Moore and Hayden Deal; a brother, Joseph Bishop and his wife, Lois, of Butler; and several nieces and nephews.

Art was educated at the Kaylor and Chicora elementary schools and graduated from the Fairview Township Karns City High School, receiving his diploma after returning home from World War II.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing and mowing his lawn.

Art joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a young man and served with the 6th Division L-322 in the South Pacific in World War II.

He was employed for 45 years at Penreco in Karns City where he was instrumental in the formation of the Penn Drake Credit Union in Karns City.

He was an active member of the St. Marks Lutheran Church in Butler where he served as an usher, a counter and a member of the Family Bible Class.

After retiring from Penreco, Art and his wife Virginia volunteered at VA Butler Healthcare for 20 years, and also delivered Meals on Wheels in the Chicora area.

He was a charter member of the Bantam Marine Corps League and a member of the Devil Dogs. He was the Butler County Veteran of the Year for 2007-08.

Art and his wife volunteered for Butler Toys for Tots since its inception in 1991.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Bishop; a sister, Doris Bishop; and a son-in-law Gerald Jody Trainer.

<B>BISHOP</B> — Friends of Arthur W. Bishop, who died Friday, July 9, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the <B>Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home</B> in Petrolia and at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Marks Lutheran Church, 201 W. Jefferson St., Butler, until 11 a.m. Funeral services will be at the Church at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Alden W. Towberman, officiating.
