Warriors off to best start since '91, Raptors now 1-15

The Golden State Warriors have shed their losing ways, at least for the first month of the season.

Jason Richardson scored a season-high 33 points, and Baron Davis added 25 points and 16 assists to lead Golden State past Sacramento 113-106 Wednesday night for its fourth straight win.

The Warriors (11-6) have their best start since winning 12 of their first 17 games in 1991-92, and had their winningest month since March 1992.

"I think we're off to a good start. But that's what it is: a start," Golden State's Mike Dunleavy said. "We're on the right track. We have a winning record, we're at the top of our division, but it's only a start."

Troy Murphy (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Adonal Foyle (10 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Golden State, which went 34-48 last season and missed the playoffs for the 11th straight year.

"They have a nice team," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "I think they're learning how to win. That's important. They had some success early and it's probably carrying over for them."

The Toronto Raptors hope their early struggles don't carry over.

Toronto shot 35 percent (25-for-72) in 92-66 loss to Memphis, dropping to an NBA-worst 1-15. Fans booed the Raptors off their home court at halftime, at the end of the third quarter and at the final buzzer.

"This is a long season and it's going to get longer if we continue to let these losses discourage us and tear the locker room up," said Mike James, was scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting from the field.

At Oakland, Calif., the Kings couldn't overcome a 5:35 stretch in the third quarter without a field goal. Sacramento tried to fight back in the fourth, as Mike Bibby hit a drive and a 3-pointer on successive possessions to cut the Warriors' lead to 100-94 with just over 3 minutes left.

Dunleavy hit two free throws on the other end, and after a three-point play by Shareef Abdur-Rahim cut it to 103-99, Dunleavy hit a 3 to put it away with just under a minute left.

"He's made some big shots for us," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "We made plays at the end of the game when you have to make plays."

The Raptors didn't make too many plays and lost their sixth straight. They have their worst start since opening the 1997-98 season 1-19 en route to a 16-66 mark.

Memphis' Damon Stoudamire, who had 19 points Wednesday night, was part of that team.

"This is the same thing that went on eight years ago," he said. "I remember them days like it was yesterday. I feel for them. I know what it's like to lose that many. What are they 1-15? I've been there before. I know all about that."

Memphis dominated across the board, outrebounding the Raptors 41-35, shooting 51 percent from the field and outscored Toronto 42-30 in the paint as the Raptors settled for long jump shots that clanged off the rim.

Donyell Marshall made a key three-point play in regulation, then hit consecutive 3-pointers in overtime to help Cleveland improve to 7-1 at home. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 29 points before fouling out in overtime and LeBron James added 28.Elton Brand scored 33 points and Sam Cassell had 26 for Los Angeles.
