Shoaff shines for SRU
Slippery Rock University's Calista Shoaff won the women's javelin throw with a mark of 124 feet, 10 inches, Saturday at the Ben Brown Track and Field Invitational in California.
Butler High School graduate Jill Rekich placed sixth (1:06) in the 400-meter hurdles, while Slippery Rock High product Melissa Sopher was seventh in the same event at 1:06.12.
The Rock's top finisher in the men's competition was Dave Pavone's second place effort in the javelin throw with a mark of 197-4.
Derek Blyzwick struck out 10 batters, walked two and allowed two earned runs on six hits in eight innings of work Monday, leading the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 4-3 victory over West Chester Monday morning in Florida.Senior third baseman Todd Schickling collected an RBI-single in the win, which snapped a 3-game losing skid for The Rock (4-4).Mars graduate Josh Rape picked up the win after pitching the top of the ninth inning.
SRUposted a pair of wins Sunday, defeating Post University 4-3 in eight innings and knocking off Bentley University, 7-2.Freshman Lisa Getgen tripled home Lindsay Rodgers in the bottom of the eighth to produce the first win. Brittany Hahn tossed a complete game and hit a run-scoring double.Meghan McHenry collecteed two homers and two singles for The Rock (3-3) in the win over Bentley. Jenna Frieling pitched a complete game.
