Peters sparks BlueSox
Few in the Prospect League have been hotter at the plate than Matt Peters.
The Butler shortstop roped a RBI double off the wall in left-center field at spacious Pullman Park in the fourth inning and added another RBI with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to spark a rally that led the BlueSox to a 5-3 win over Slippery Rock Tuesday night.
Peters extended his hitting streak to nine games and raised his batting average to .360.
The all-star from Upper Darby and California (Pa.) University is second in the league in batting average.
He came inches away from his first home run of the season, turning on a fastball from Slippery Rock reliever Tyler Wilson and smacking it high off the left-field wall.
“I think that's about all he has,” Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski said, laughing. “The middle of our lineup has been producing with Peters and (Pat) McCarthy. Really, all the way down to No. 6.”
The middle of that lineup came up big in the eighth after the BlueSox fell behind 3-1.
Peters walked to bring home a run and McCarthy followed with a single to tie the game at 3-3.
A wacky play followed when Tyler Detmer skied a fly ball to center that was dropped by Storm Wilson, who quickly recovered and threw to second to get a force out. Ryan Fitzgerald had tagged up and scored anyway and Butler led 4-3.
Alex Miklos, who was mired in a 3-for-24 slump, followed with a sharp singled to right to give Butler a 5-3 advantage.
“Miklos has been struggling a little bit, so it was nice to see him get that single to right-center,” Rebyanski said. “That put a smile on his face and we haven't seen that a lot lately. Hopefully that last at-bat will get his confidence back.”
Three of the runs were charged to Tyler Wilson, who pitched five strong innings in relief of starter Kade Garlington.
“He did a great job. He came in and put up five zeros,” said Slippery Rock manager Brett Neffendorf. “He's usually a starter. He did a heck of a job and gave us a chance to win.”
But Tyler Wilson struggled in the eighth during a heavy rain that fell on Pullman Park.
“I don't think the rain bothered him at all,” Neffendorf said. “He just didn't throw strikes, and I had to go to the pen.”
Storm Wilson also had a solid game for the Sliders with three doubles. His double to lead off the top of the sixth led to a run when Joel Klock drove him home with a sharp double to tie the score at 1-1.
Slippery Rock got two more runs in the top of the eighth off Tyler Swarmer to take a brief 3-1 lead. Both runs were unearned.
It was the second straight night the Sliders lost the lead late.
“It's a long summer,” Neffendorf said. “There's 60 games and if you dwell on one game, you're going to struggle. Our guys do a great job of flushing the last one. Our guys came out last night and lost a heartbreaker and then came back and battled down to the last pitch tonight.”
Reid Noah picked up the win, working just 2-3 of an inning. Anthony Caringi got the start and struck out seven in 5 1-3 innings for a no decision.
Adam Tyson pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
“He hasn't had a lot of save opportunities this season,” Rebyanski said. “But he's been solid.
“With Tyler Ferguson (a left-hander), we hope we can set them off each other. We've been using Ferguson earlier in game. He was a starter in school and he can eat up some innings.”
Butler wrapped up its six-game homestand with a 5-1 record and is now just three games out of first place in the East Division.
The BlueSox will travel to Lorain County today for the start of a two-game set with the Scrappers.
“We have to show up tomorrow with the same kind of attitude in Lorain and keep it going,” Rebyanski said. “That's a tough place to play.”
