Area businesses receive grants for hazard pay

Workers can get extra $3/hour

Fifteen Butler County businesses received more than $1 million in state grants to give their employees an additional $3 per hour hazard pay.

The businesses — which run the gamut from security service companies to health care to food manufacturing operations — also spanned the length of the county, from Northgate Bilo Foods & Pharmacy in Jackson Township to Oneida Valley Grocery in Venango Township.

By far, the majority of the money — roughly $775,000 — went to businesses engaged in providing health care services, while the one food manufacturer, Miller's Quality Meats in Butler, received about $14,000.

Lifesteps, which is headquartered in Butler with 64 locations in Western Pennsylvania, received $550,800 to grant hazard pay. According to its website, the company has more than 700 employees.

The program that granted these funds, the COVID-19 PA Hazard Pay Grant Program, is administered by the Department of Community & Economic Development and was designed to keep employees in “life-sustaining” businesses working.

Employers who receive grants through the program can give up to $3 per hour for full- and part-time employees who make less than $20 per hour, or up to $1,200 per such employee, during the 10-week period from Aug. 16 through Oct. 24. Grant applications were accepted through July 31.

Pennsylvania was able to fund the program with money received from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.
