Airplane crash kills only 2 aboard
WEST CHESTER — A small plane crash near a southeastern Pennsylvania airport Sunday took the lives of the only two people aboard the aircraft, authorities said.
Emergency officials said the crash was reported just after 1:30 p.m. near Brandywine Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper PA28 took off from the airport and went down about two miles away then burst into flames. It appeared the pilot lost control of the plane before it went down in a field in West Goshen, officials said.
The West Goshen police said the two killed were males.
Brandywine Airport officials declined comment on the crash, citing the ongoing investigation.
“There were two lives lost; our hearts go out to the families,” said Jeff Suveg, the airport’s assistant manager.
The crash site was close to two residences and Harrison Hills Apartments, a new senior citizen complex, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
A nearby resident told the newspaper he saw smoke and fire but heard nothing. Frank Kraus, a resident at the apartment complex, said he heard a “big bang” and was concerned with how close the plane came to the apartments.
Joe Sestak ends journey across state
OHIOVILLE — Ending a 422-mile walk across Pennsylvania, former Congressman Joe Sestak said Saturday he hoped the trek will ease what he called the country’s biggest shortfall — the “trust deficit” between politicians and the people who elect them.
The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate began the final leg of his journey in Beaver County near the Ohio line before finishing at an Ohioville park, along with 40 supporters.
“I want to earn their trust and let them know that I’m not above accountability,” Sestak said after completing his “Walking in Other Pennsylvanians’ Shoes” effort he began when he announced his campaign March 4.
Sestak is hoping to win the seat now occupied by Republican Pat Toomey.
Other than trust, which is what “everyone nods their heads about,” Sestak said the issues he has heard about most are small business job creation and affordable education. If elected, he said, he’ll work to ease the regulatory burden on small businesses and increase their access to venture capital.
