ESPN isn't televising Minto fight

While Brian Minto is stepping up to the plate, but ESPN won't be on the field.

The cable network's "Friday Night at the Fights" won't be covering Minto's Aug. 14 bout against undefeated Donnell Holmes for the WBO NABO heavyweight title at Pullman Park.

"ESPN will not be airing this year's show," Minto's manager, Pat Nelson, said. "That's a definite. They have other commitments."

Minto (33-1, 21 knockouts) is training with Freddie Roach in Hollywood, Calif. Minto is ranked No. 9 in the world by the WBO and No. 15 by the WBA.

Holmes (31-0-2, 27 KOs) is ranked No. 13 in the world by the WBC.

"We have approximately 1,000 seats left and we're expecting a sellout within two weeks," Nelson said.

The boxing card begins at 8 p.m. and will feature six four-round bouts on the undercard of the 12-round main event.

Undercard fights include:

• Sharpsburg welterweight Jose Carabello (5-4) vs. Khristian Geraci (4-6) of Mount Washington

• Brookline's Sammy Suska (0-1) vs. debuting Billy "The Kid" Hampton of Zanesville, Ohio

• Heavyweight Paul "Zeus" Zalus (1-0) of West Deer vs. debuting Justin Novaria of Zanesville

• Heavyweight Rocky Mulooly (2-2) of Erie vs. Brandon Winner (2-6) of Youngstown, Ohio

• Welterweight Tom Joseph (4-2-1) of Youngstown vs. Gabriel Morris (1-2-1) of Toledo, Ohio

• Welterweight Clifford Gregory (0-5-3) of New Castle vs. Shane Gierke (4-18-2) of Warren, Ohio

Zalus, a former Butler County Community College student whose father lives in Butler, is coming off a second-round knockout of Justin Riegle (2-1) April 17 at the Butler Days Inn. That also was on a Minto undercard.

Zalus is 6-feet-4, 240 pounds while his opponent this time is 6-2, 250 pounds. Zalus outweighed Riegle by nearly 40 pounds.

"I know this is a big guy, but I don't anything else about him," Zalus said. "I try to work my skills in the ring, but with my power ... guys can't handle it."

Zalus, 28, was 30-11 in 41 amateur fights before turning pro. He is a full-time boxer at the moment.

"I've got more of a pro style than an amateur style," he said. "I won Golden Gloves titles three times, but I'm a power puncher who likes to hit a guy."

Tickets are available at the Butler County Housing and Redevelopment office on Woody Drive, the Pullman Park box office or by calling 724-287-6797.

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $35 for reserved and $50 for ringside.
