Bookworms and bookmarks
The Cranberry Women’s Club didn’t make a monetary donation to the Cranberry Public Library this year, but the homemade items the club did donate have been all the rage with patrons of the library.
Members of the club made hundreds of bookmarks using donated greeting cards, which are available in the Cranberry library for patrons to take — not just borrow from the library.
Kathleen Perry, a member of the Cranberry Women’s Club, said the club used to send these greeting cards to a mission in Africa, which recycled the cards, but mailing costs and restrictions on types of cards became more complicated. The club instead donated its creations to its hometown library.
“The club members cut the greeting cards into interesting shapes depending on the card design,” Perry said. “There was six or seven of us and we spent hours cutting out the cards and the ribbon. We write ‘Enjoy the read,’ or ‘Books inspire,’ whatever they think is appropriate.”
In addition to the bookmarks, the Cranberry Women’s Club crocheted “bookworms” to also give to the library for its summer reading program for children. The theme for the children was “Color your world,” so a few members crocheted 150 worms for the library. Perry said these bookworms are also at the library for children to take home.
“Bright colors with wiggly eyes will surely be a hit with the children this summer,” Perry said. “It’s very simple and it seems to make a lot of people happy.”
