Butler wrestlers 3rd at Virginia Duals

Butler’s wrestling team placed third overall Saturday in the American High School division of the Virginia Duals.

The Golden Tornado went 5-1, the lone loss being a 36-32 decision to Virginia power Grundy. Butler had a 32-3 lead in that dual. Victories were 72-0 over Miles Godwin (Va.), 58-22 over Hayfield (Va.), 64-15 over Currituck County (N.C.), 43-30 over Skyline (Va.) and 39-25 over Westfield (Va.).

Three Butler wrestlers went 6-0 over the weekend: Ana Malovich (15-2) at 106 pounds, Dom Vivirito (15-4) at 138 and Levi Donnel (17-0) at 145. Malovich had four pins, Donnel three.

Finishing 5-1 for the Torrnado were Gavin Rush at 120 pounds, Kase Chopp at 126, Matt Zinkhann at 150, Mickey Kreinbucher (17-3) at 172 and Jake Pomykata (11-2) at heavyweight. Chopp had five pins in the tourney.

Butler travels to West Allegheny Tuesday night before hosting Seneca Valley Wednesday.

Indoor Track

Emma Lehman took first place in the 60-meter hurdles Friday night as Butler competed in the Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet at Edinboro University.

Ali Morrow took second in the long jump and Megan Baggetta was second in the long jump for the Golden Tornado.

On the boys side, Butler came away with six first-place finishes. Guinness Brown tied his school record in winning the 60 meters in 7.04 seconds. He also won the 200 meters. Sage Vavro won the mile, Tristan McGarrah the pole vault and Tyler Rekich the long jump.

The Tornado’s mile relay team of Presley Ornelas, Lucas Slear, Ryder Kriley and Brown won that race by nine seconds.

Slippery Rock competed at a meet Saturday hosted by Youngstown State University. Ethan Folmer placed second in the boys triple jump and set a school record of 41 feet, 9.5 inches. He also took second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.

Dustin Joyce was fourth in the boys triple jump and eighth in the long jump, Seaton Wozniak fourth in the boys shot put. Laila Hackwelder was seventh in the girls high jump.

Girls Basketball

Alexa McDole struck for 25 points Saturday as Mars toppled Pine-Richland, 66-49.

Ava Black and Kate Pelaia score 16 points each for the Planets (11-2), who return to section play Thursday, hosting Armstrong. Madison Zavasky netted 14 points to lead Pine-Richland.

Brockway 49, Karns City 38 — Brooke Manuel scored 15 points and Emma Johns 10 for the Gremlins, who dropped this Saturday road game. Danielle Wood scored 21 for Brockway.

Boys Basketball

Andrew Maddalon and Max Hurray scored 23 points each, but North Catholic dropped a 74-59 decision Saturday at Central Catholic.

The loss was the first of the season for the Trojans (10-1), who host Burrell Fridayu. Dante Depante paced Central with 27.

Swimming

Slippery Rock competed in the Falcon Invitational Saturday at Spire Institute. The Lady Rockets finished first out of 11 teams while the boys were sixth out of 12 squads.

Mollie Massella won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly. She also swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Natalie Double, Ann-Katherine Burns and Katie Shea joined her on those relays.

Double won the 100 backstroke and Burns the 100 breaststroke. Cody Hartle won the 200 IM.
