The Pittsburgh Pirates took the first right-handed high school pitcher of the 2025 MLB draft on Sunday, Corona High’s (Cali.) Seth Hernandez with the sixth overall pick.

The Pirates took another California prep righty with their second pick, then dove into the college pool of talent for much of the rest of the draft.

High school pitchers are notoriously tough to draft and develop, but Hernandez was considered the best in his class. And Pittsburgh hopes he can develop an arsenal that already includes a high-90s fastball.
