Adams Township to collect cans of food at polling places
Adams Township will continue its annual “Cast a Can, Cast a Vote” food drive on Election Day Tuesday.
Voters at all Adams Township polling places can bring cans and other nonperishable items to donate to benefit the Kilian Cupboard food pantry at Saint Kilian Parish.
Saint Kilian Parish, the St. Vincent de Paul Society Saint Kilian Council and the Knights of Columbus Saint Kilian Conference founded the Kilian Cupboard in 2013. It is located at the Saint Kilian Parish Hall in Mars, at Clark and Cherry Streets inside the former Saint Kilian Parish Church.
“We started (the food drive) a couple years ago, and are just continuing it for each election,” Adams Parks & Recreation director Haley Geyer said. “We're trying to make things repetitive and annual, so that people get into the groove and remember it each year.”
The food and supply drive project began in 2019. In past years, Geyer said, Adams voters have filled multiple truckloads with cans and home nonperishable items, including paper towels and toilet paper.
“With Election Day being so close to Thanksgiving, we try to give back with any event that we are doing,” Geyer said.
This weekend, at Saturday's Halloween parade at the Veterans Pavilion in Adams Township Community Park, Girl Scout Troop 28033 also collected cans and other goods for The Lighthouse Foundation.
“It went really well,” Geyer said. “The rain held off and we had clear weather, and we had somewhere around 120 to 125 families participate (in the parade).”
Geyer says the township also plans to hold a food drive at its event in December.
