Man accused of stealing, crashing parents' car, resisting arrest

Zachery T. Shields

A 22-year-old man allegedly stole his parents' car, crashed it and resisted when officers arrested him for the theft.

Butler City police Friday charged Zachery T. Shields, of Butler, with felony theft and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Following his arraignment by District Judge Sue Haggerty, Shields was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police responded to Hickory Street in Butler, where Shields lives with his parents.

Police said they talked with Shields' father, who said his son had taken a red 1999 Volkswagen Beetle without permission.

“(The father) said he was contacted by Butler Township Police due to his vehicle being in a motor vehicle crash,” police said.

According to police, both Shields' mother and father denied giving him permission to take the car, and while police were at the home, Shields called his mother and said he was not going to return home to talk with police.

Police were returning to the station when they were alerted that Shields returned to his home. Police went back to the family's home and told Shields he was under arrest.

“Zachery became confrontational and stated he was not going to jail,” police said.

Police said while they were handcuffing Shields, he kept pulling his hands away from them, and he refused to follow their commands.

A preliminary hearing for the case has been scheduled Aug. 9 before District Judge William Fullerton.
