Butler County girls lacrosse all-stars: Meet the 2025 player of the year, first team, honorable mentions
This season was more of the same when it came to girls lacrosse in Butler County. Mars won another WPIAL Class 2A title, Butler reached the district tournament and a number of talented players stood out.
The Planets went 10-0 in section play, routinely dominating each opponent and totaling 338 goals on the season. Their offense was backed up by one of the best goalies in the nation, which helped power them into the state tournament once again.
Freeport, despite not making the postseason, had a pair of girls make some noise, one of which will be back to guide the offense next season.
Here are the Butler County girls lacrosse all-stars, in alphabetical order, including player of the year, first team and honorable mention:
Ella Roach, sr., G, Mars
Roach was voted team MVP, and it’s not hard to see why. She stopped 138 shots this season and 440 over her four-year career. Not only was she named All-WPIAL Class 2A and All-Section, she was the lone Butler County player to be named an All-American by USA Lacrosse. She’ll play at Duquesne next season.
Katie Blake, so., A, Mars
The Planets will have a lot of firepower returning the next year or two, which should keep them firmly at the front of the pack for more WPIAL hardware. Blake finished with 62 goals and 15 assists to earn WPIAL All-Section second team honors.
Ava Dreher, sr., A, Freeport
Dreher was named the Yellowjackets’ MVP after a 40-goal, seven-assist season. She also earned WPIAL All-Section second team honors. She’ll play at Westminster College next season.
Macey Edwards, so., M, Freeport
The Yellowjackets’ sophomore was named their offensive player of the year after scoring 41 goals and distributing nine assists to earn a WPIAL All-Section nod.
Taryn Hilovsky, jr., A, Butler
The Golden Tornado’s leading scorer finished with 48 goals and 11 assists, while also contributing in other facets of the game with 32 ground balls. She was named WPIAL All-Section second team. She played for the Germany U20 national team last year and will play collegiately at Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2027.
Rylee Hurley, sr., D, Butler
A team captain and its MVP, as well as WPIAL All-Section, Hurley proved adept on the defensive end after a move from midfielder two games into the season. The shift was necessitated by injuries on the roster, and she more than held her own with 70 ground balls and 33 forced turnovers. Added two goals and 17 draw controls.
Hailey Long, so., M, Mars
A lot of attention will be put on the Planets’ twins (see below) heading into 2026, but Long, a year younger, is an equally important part of the returning core. She demanded defenses’ attention with 61 goals and 18 assists, and she was a draw-control specialist with 132 wins in that part of the game. Finished WPIAL All-Section, as well.
Malina McElroy, so., M, Butler
McElroy didn’t dominate in any one category, but true to midfielder form, she contributed a bit of everything. She recorded a team-high 64 draw controls while also providing 19 goals, six assists, 25 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. She was also the mark on most opponents’ best players and never left the field.
Anna McGrath, jr., M, Mars
Perhaps no player in the county had more well-rounded stats than Anna, who made a formidable duo with her twin (more on her to come). She finished with an absurd 54 goals and 40 assists for 94 points. She was a two-way force, though, recording 78 draw controls while causing 24 turnovers and snagging 19 ground balls. She was named the team’s defensive MVP, All-WPIAL and All-Section.
Tess McGrath, jr., M, Mars
Not to be outdone by her twin, Tess was a dynamic force in the offensive zone, scoring 64 goals to pair with 19 assists. She was named the team’s offensive MVP, giving the family both halves of the field, and voted All-WPIAL Class 2A and All-Section.
Elliette Smith, sr., M, Butler
Smith, a second-team all-conference honoree, scored 20 goals, dished out nine assists and caused 21 turnovers while hardly ever getting a break for the Golden Tornado. The Butler captain will be playing lacrosse at Grove City College next season.
Gia DiTullio, sr., D, Seneca Valley; Sophia Glass, fr., A, Freeport; Niki Lefcakis, fr., D, Mars; Abigail Legin, jr., G, Freeport; Gia Lapinsky, sr., G, North Catholic; Chloe Master, so., D, Freeport; Izzy Skal, so., A, Butler; Brooke Steyer, so., M, Butler
