William ‘Bill’ Groom

William “Bill” Howard Groom passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Bill grew up in Mars, and loved the small-town community where he was raised. Bill often returned to Mars to visit the many lifelong friends he made there during his youth and while attending Mars area schools. Bill was proud to be a member of the graduating class of 1967 of Mars Area High School and enjoyed helping to organize their many class reunions.

After high school, Bill was honored to serve in the U.S. Navy and spent time aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy. After military service, he returned to Mars and married his wife of 53 years, Becky. They have two sons in Port Orange, Fla., Jason and Billy. In 1981, the family moved to Florida; and in 2007, Bill retired after 25 years of service to the City of Port Orange. Bill loved his family and friends but was often kidded that his favorite love was the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bill is survived by his wife, Becky; their sons, Jason (Meredith) and Billy (Melanee); his grandson, Jason Jr. (Raven) and their son, Carter; and his grandson, Grant; all of whom reside in Florida. Bill is also survived by his son, Brian Rau, who resides in Butler, along with his wife, Nan, and their children, Brandon and Kayla; his sister, Nancy Kushner; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Hospice Care Center of Port Orange, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Fla., or Reflections Memory Care, 1321 Herbert Street, Port Orange, FL 32129. Both organizations provided excellent care and support during his declining days.
