Sun shines on royal fairytale wedding

LONDON — Prince William today married Kate Middleton in a fairytale ceremony that saw London erupt into jubilant celebrations, and was watched by hundreds of millions around the world.

Up to a million people cheered Britain’s new royal couple along the procession route, and surged to the gates of Buckingham Palace to witness them display their affection with — not one, but two — public kisses during the traditional balcony appearance.

“We want Kate, we want Kate,” shouted the crowds, as the bride, now officially known as the Duchess of Cambridge, emerged — hand in hand with her husband — from a sombre and moving wedding service at Westminster Abbey.

The wedding was the most important royal event since the marriage of William’s parents, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, in 1981.

The 29-year-old bride looked radiant in a lace-topped ivory dress by the label of late British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, while Prince William wore the scarlet uniform of the Irish Guards.

Amid a massive display of pageantry, the couple rode to Buckingham Palace in an open-topped Landau carriage pulled by four grays — the same carriage used by Diana 30 years ago.
