Staff and students at Sugarcreek Elementary School were joined by community members Nov. 9 as they honored a former student for Veterans Day.

The group contributed $950 to a scholarship fund in the name of Carl Curran, who died May 17 during military service in Al Karmah, near Fallujah.

Curan graduated from Karns City High School in 2000.

The fund is being handled by Farmer's National Bank in East Brady.

The scholarship drive was spearheaded by sixth grade teacher David McElroy, who presented the gift to Carl's father, Dave Curran. "Carl made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life for you and me so that we could be safe and maintain our freedoms," McElroy said.

Each grade contributed to the program by reciting a favorite poem or singing a favorite song in honor of the guest veterans.

Guest veterans came from the Chicora, Cowansville, Kaylor, and East Brady American Legion Posts, as well as from the Mechling Shakley Veterans Center in Cowansville.
