ZELIENOPLE — Five college-bound Seneca Valley High School graduates were presented $1,000 scholarships on Aug. 7, compliments of the Zelienople Rotary Club.

The club also awarded a $1,000 college scholarship sponsored by a magazine.

The scholarships were presented during a steak dinner at Community Park for the students and their families.

A committee interviewed candidates for the Rotary scholarships in April and selected the winners based on their academic achievements, financial need and volunteer work in the community. The Rotary Club, which has a motto of "Service Above Self," places emphasis on students who exhibit the spirit of volunteerism.

Winners this year included Angela Vecchio of Zelienople, who will major in psychology at Clarion University, and Jenna Leddon of Zelienople, who will pursue rehabilitative sciences for the developmentally disabled at Clarion University.

Kathleen Torso of Zelienople will study history at Lock Haven University, while Heather Neighoff of Harmony will major in fashion merchandising at Mercyhurst College.

Bria Koch of Zelienople, who plans to be a pediatrician, will major in biology/chemistry or psychology at Grove City College.

The Zelienople Rotary for the first time this year presented a journalism scholarship sponsored by Maureen Lutz, owner of North Hills Monthly Magazine.

The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Lindsay Codispot of Cranberry Township, who will major in journalism at Allegheny College.
