Route 38 reopens after flood closure

A pickup plows through the water Wednesday on Route 38 in Oakland Township. Heavy rain caused flooding along several sections of the highway and forced a temporary closure.
Problems remain on other roads in county

Route 38 was reopened to traffic at 6:30 a.m. today in both directions from the Route 68 ramp in Summit Township to West Sunbury Road in Oakland Township after being closed Wednesday because of flooding.

The state Department of Transportation closed that section of the road after an overnight rainstorm hit Tuesday into early Wednesday.

“It's flooded in multiple locations,” said Mike Mattis, an assistant manager with PennDOT in Butler County, on Wednesday “Water is still coming up along the creek.”

Mattis said he received his first report of flooding about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The route follows Connoquenessing Creek and intersects with some of its tributaries.

It's not the first time the road has flooded.

“Anytime there is a big storm, there is some flooding along the road,” he said. “It runs so close to the creek.”

However, several other roads remained closed as of 7:30 a.m. today, according to Butler County 911 records.

The latest problem reported was a tree down on Barkley Road in Brady Township at 5:18 a.m.

Eagle Mill Road in Connoquenessing Township and Sawmill Run Road in Butler Township were washed out earlier this week.

Bonniebrook Road between Great Belt Road and Roenigk Drive in Jefferson Township and North Creek Road in Slippery Rock Township also were closed. A vehicle had hit a utility pole along Bonniebrook.

Other roads reportedly flooded Wednesday were West New Castle Street in Zelienople, Hoon Road in Oakland Township and Dick Road in Connoquenessing Township.

A fallen tree blocked Oneida Valley Road in Concord Township.

In Allegheny Township, a tree fell on a vehicle along Parker Pike.

No injuries were reported.
