Pullman Park adds event to schedule
Pullman Park’s spring schedule has gotten a little busier.
Dess Schnur, director of stadium operations, announced Tuesday that the Penn State University Athletic Conference Baseball Championships will return to the ballpark April 26-28.
Pullman Park hosted this double-elimination tournament in 2010. Last year’s event was held at University Park.
“We had a tremendous experience last time we were there,” said Jim Chester, coach of league favorite PSU-Greater Allegheny and a tournament director. “When we’re unable to secure our field at University Park, we have to look elsewhere and that’s the case this year.
“The turf at Pullman Park is fantastic. It’s a great facility.”
The PSUAC consists of 10 Penn State branch campuses: Fayette, Beaver, Greater Allegheny, Mont Alto, Penn College, Wilkes Barre, Hazelton, York, Brandywine and Scranton. The top-four baseball teams in the league will play in this tournament.
The winner receives an automatic berth in the 10-team United States College Athletic Association (USCAA) World Series, slated for Springfield, Ill., this year.
That World Series will be played at Pullman Park next year.
The USCAA is a national organization for schools with enrollment of 1,500 students or fewer.
“It’s growing like crazy,” Chester said. “The NAIA is dying and the USCAA is picking up a lot of those schools.”
Of the six games played in last year’s PSUAC Baseball Championships, four were decided by one run.
“Our league is more competitive than it’s ever been,” Chester said.
Tim Connelly, a left-handed pitcher who played for the Butler BlueSox last summer and is returning to the squad this summer, pitches for PSU-Greater Allegheny.
Only days after this tournament concludes, the eight-team Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament will be played at Pullman Park for the first time. It is also a double-elimination event.
“There will be plenty of opportunities to see good baseball down here,” Schnur said.
Including scrimmages, there are 43 high school games scheduled for Pullman Park this spring. The first is a scrimmage March 10 between Bradford and Butler.
Knoch, Karns City and Moniteau will play all of their home games at Pullman, resulting in a few high school doubleheaders on the docket.
“High school teams welcome the chance to play at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. now,” Schnur said. “Those starting times practically triple their attendance.”
Butler High School is scheduled to play seven games at Pullman this season.
