DUBOIS — It appeared as though Karns City’s bats had come to life just in time against Bedford pitcher Ty Decker.
The senior had entered Monday’s PIAA Class 3A baseball subregional playoff in the midst of KC’s three-run second inning and proceeded to retire 13 of the first 14 batters he faced.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Gremlins plated a pair of runs on two hits to cut their deficit to a single run. The tying run was on second base and the winning run on first.
But Decker struck out Jacob Jones and Adam Manuel to end the game as well as KC’s hopes of advancing to the state playoffs in a 6-5 decision at Showers Field.
Decker struck out 12 and walked one while earning the victory.
“No. 1, he’s a lefty, and we don’t face many of those,” KC coach Josh Smith said. “He has an above-average fastball and really good snap on his curveball. We had a chance there at the end, and you can’t ask for a better situation than to have your No. 3 and 4 hitters, both seniors, at the plate.”
KC’s late runs came when Koen Williams scored on an error following a base hit from Colton Christie, and Mason Sherwin singled in a fifth run.
The Bisons (13-9), champions of District 5, scored five runs off KC starter Jones in the second inning and never trailed.
Owen Tedrow and Gaston Watkins both singled in a run during the flurry.
Jones and Manuel were supposed to be the Gremlins’ 1-2 punch on the mound, but Manuel had been hampered by an injured ankle.
“With Adam out, Jacob had to do a lot of heavy lifting over the last few weeks,” Smith said. “His career is not defined by one outing.”
The Gremlins (13-7) answered with three runs in their half of the second, with Tyler Kelly’s single bringing home the team’s first run and Mason Sherwin singling in two more.
The damage was charged to Bedford starter Gabe Taylor, who was pulled in favor of Decker.
Manuel allowed a run in his first inning of relief, the third, but then the game became a pitcher’s duel between him and Decker.
“Ty did a great job of keeping their hitters off-balanced,” Bedford coach Jordan Mills said. “He showed great mentality to get out of that jam in the seventh.”
In five innings of work, Manuel allowed one run on three hits on the mound for the Gremlins, champions of District 9.
“Adam did everything he could do to battle and he kept us in the game,” Smith said. “We won 13 games this season, and that’s tough to do. We grew as a team.”
