College roundup: Slippery Rock women’s lacrosse falls in NCAA semifinals to Adelphi
The longest postseason run in Slippery Rock women’s lacrosse history came to an end Thursday night.
In the NCAA Division II Tournament semifinals for the first time, the No. 2-seed Rock (18-3) were knocked out by No. 3 Adelphi 15-13 at Roanoke College, Salem, Va.
The Atlantic Region champions were the only team in the final four that had not at least played in a national championship game before. Adelphi won the title in 2022 and was the runner-up last year. The lacrosse team is the fifth in SRU athletics history to make a national semifinal, joining the football team (three times) and baseball team.
Grace Rotter scored a game-high five goals and tied for the game-high with three assists for Slippery Rock, and Isabella Buono added two goals and two assists.
The Rock trailed just 7-6 at halftime, but Aldephi (19-3) outscored them 6-0 in the third quarter to take control. Marielle Colalillo scored three of those goals.
Rotter netted all five of her goals in the fourth quarter as SRU mounted a comeback, but it wasn’t enough.
Two Butler graduates will compete next week in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships east first round.
Former Golden Tornado standout distance runners CJ Singleton, a junior at Notre Dame, and Sage Vavro, a sophomore at Youngstown State, will run the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The first round meet will be held May 28-31 at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville.
Singleton enters as the 18th seed with a top time of 8 minutes, 42.41 seconds. Vavro is seeded 43rd with a top time of 8:51.26. Louisville freshman Geoffrey Kirwa is the top seed with an 8:13.89.
The top qualifiers from the east and west regions head to the University of Oregon for the national championships June 11-14.
