Tumbling down the standings
In two Prospect League baseball games against host West Virginia over the weekend, the Butler BlueSox totaled just three runs on seven hits, losing to the Miners by scores of 9-3 and 2-0.
In Saturday’s 9-3 defeat, Butler led 2-0 after four and a half innings before West Virginia plated four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take control of the game.
BlueSox starter Gage Carpenter was tagged for four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Relievers Tanner Schumacher and Dave Yakopec also had poor outings and combined to surrender five runs (four earned) in just 2 1/3 innings.
Nick Sell led Butler’s bats with two singles and a run scored while Mick Fennell drove in two runs.
The BlueSox managed just two hits in Sunday’s 2-0 loss as Miners’ starter Chase Boster (nine) and reliever Dalton Curtis (one) combined for 10 strikeouts.
Collin Massanelli and Cody Herald both singled for Butler.
Fennell pitched well for the BlueSox, but wound up with the loss.
He surrendered just one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Butler (15-13) has lost three straight games and is now in third place in the East Division behind Chillicothe (18-9) and West Virginia (17-12).
Butler hosts Richmond (Ind.) tonight at 6:35 p.m.
