Kim Kardashian faces Paris robbery suspects

PEOPLE
Kim Kardashian

PARIS — Kim Kardashian appeared in a Paris courtroom Tuesday to testify in the trial over the 2016 armed robbery that upended her life. The business mogul gave emotional, at times harrowing, testimony about the night masked men tied her up at gunpoint and stole $6 million in jewelry.

Kardashian said she was starting to doze off in bed when she heard stomping on the stairs. She assumed it was her sister Kourtney.

Moments later, two masked men dressed as police burst in, dragging the concierge in handcuffs.

Kardashian grabbed her phone but said she “didn’t know what 911 was (in France).” The men threw her on the bed, bound her hands and held a gun to her back.

“I have babies,” she told them. “Take everything. I just have to make it home.”

Her robe fell open as one man pulled her toward him, exposing her. “I was certain he was going to rape me,” Kardashian said.

One attacker told her, in English, she’d be OK if she stayed quiet. He taped her mouth shut, and took her to the bathroom.

Kardashian later freed her hands and went to find her stylist, Simone Harouche. The two climbed onto the balcony and hid in bushes.

The men took a diamond ring and a watch her late father had given her.

Investigators believe the attackers followed Kardashian’s digital images, timestamps and geotags and exploited them.

The robbery reshaped Kardashian’s sense of safety. Now, she often rents adjoining hotel rooms for protection, no longer stores jewelry at home and has up to six security guards. She also no longer makes social media posts in real time.

In a powerful moment, the chief judge read aloud a letter from one of the accused, who is too ill to testify. It said he’d seen Kardashian cry on television and expressed regret. She was visibly moved.

“I do appreciate the letter,” she said. “I forgive you. But it doesn’t change the trauma and the way my life is forever changed.”

Kardashian, who is studying to become a lawyer, said “I’ve always believed in second chances.”

Twelve suspects originally were charged. One has died. One was excused due to illness. The French press dubbed the group “the grandpa robbers,” but prosecutors say they weren’t harmless retirees.

The defendants face armed robbery, kidnapping and gang association charges. If convicted, they could get life in prison.

The trial is expected to conclude May 23.

Sean Penn

Sean Penn defends Woody Allen against Dylan Farrow molestation allegations

Sean Penn is skeptical of Dylan Farrow’s molestation allegations against Woody Allen, 89.

When asked on “The Louis Theroux Podcast” if he’d ever consider working with the director again he said, “I’d work with him in a heartbeat. If it was the right project.”

Penn added: “Do I think he has a bad rap? With these things, I don’t know anyone well enough to say 100% this didn’t happen. The stories are mostly told by people I wouldn’t trust with a dime. It seems so heavily weighted in that way.”

Theroux pushed back, asking Penn for clarification about where he stands, explaining the famed director was accused by “mainly his estranged daughter but also his son, Ronan Farrow, the journalist.”

Doubling down, Penn explained why he has doubts about the allegations against Allen. “Put it this way: I am not aware and maybe I’m just an ignoramus. I am not aware of any clinical psychologist or psychiatrist or anyone (speak) to the subject of pedophilia that in 80 years, there’s accusations of it happening only once.

“And when people try to associate what were his much younger girlfriends, right or wrong is not the conversation here. Post-puberty, consensual stuff is a different conversation.”

“I see he’s not proven guilty, so I take him as innocent,” Penn told Theroux.

Penn was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Allen’s film “Sweet and Lowdown.”

Although Dylan maintains she was sexually abused by her father, he’s never been charged. Allen has denied all accusations.
