Cochran breaks Rock record
Freeport High product and Slippery Rock University senior Lacey Cochran broke the women's track school record in the 400-meter dash with a third-place time of 57.35 seconds Saturday at the Akron Open.
Rock junior Jenn Harpp broke both the SRU and PSAC women's records in the 5,000-meter run with a first-place time of 16:39.41.
• On the men's side, SRU senior Jeff Weiss placed fifth in the mile run in Akron with a time of four minutes, 9.33 seconds.
The finish broke the oldest record in school history, previously held by Ed Gralewski (4:12.70 in 1972).
Denell Stephens scored a game-high 26 points and added nine rebounds to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to a 96-87 road win over PSAC-West rival Edinboro on Saturday.The victory moves The Rock (16-7, 7-3) one step closer to a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.If SRU qualifies for the tourney, it would be The Rock's first appearance since the 1999-2000 season.
The Rock used a 17-4 second half run to come from behind and post a 73-64 win at Edinboro.Haley Gaidosh led SRU (9-14, 4-6) with 17 points and Grove City High product Julie Molloy added 13.
Knoch High graduate Chelsea Gibson led The Rock to a 6-3 win over Bloomsburg on Sunday by winning both her singles match (3-6, 6-4, 6-0) and her doubles match (8-6), in which she was paired with teammate Lara Rizzi.
