College roundup: Slippery Rock’s Alexsa Hurd named all-region; SRU women’s tennis advances in NCAAs

Slippery Rock softball’s Alexsa Hurd was named to the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Atlantic Region first team Monday.

The senior was nominated at utility player and pitcher after she went 17-7 with a save, 3.13 ERA, 243 strikeouts in the circle and hit .292 with 40 runs scored, 48 RBIs and 16 home runs, which led the Atlantic Region.

Hurd, a four-time All-PSAC West honoree, holds program records with career hits (188), doubles (40), homers (43), RBIs (156) and total bases (361) on offense and is third in runs scored (122); and 40 wins as a pitcher while ranking second in strikeouts (563) and innings (466).

Knoch, Butler grads makes track regionals

Knoch alumnus Alex Cotton (discus, shot put) is among 18 Penn State-Behrend track and field athletes to make the All-Atlantic Region conference championships, which begin Wednesday.

Also set to compete will be Butler graduate Isaac Busler, a junior on Grove City’s men’s 4x400 relay team that qualified for regionals.

SRU tennis advances in NCAAs

Slippery Rock women’s tennis advanced out of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament Tuesday, beating IUP 4-3 to make the national championships. The first round begins May 21.

Despite losing Singles 1 and Singles 2, The Rock were able to win with depth. Nicole Kempton, Tina Slovak and Georgie Lancaster won in three sets in Singles 3, 4 and 6, respectively. Dari Sakhanova won in straight sets in Singles 3.

The Rock (15-9) swept Shaw 4-0 Monday in the first round, its fourth straight first-round win.

Grove City baseball makes NCAAs

Grove City College baseball will face Rowan in Ohio in the first round of the NCAA Division III regional tournament, which starts Friday at Mt. Union. The tournament is double-elimination, and start times have not been announced.

It’s the Wolverines’ second NCAA tournament berth, its first since 2008.
