MCKEES ROCKS — One brother has died and another is in a Pittsburgh hospital following a house fire in a nearby suburb.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says 63-year-old William Naves died in the fire in Stowe Township. The fire started about 1 a.m. today.

Stowe Fire Chief Martin Jacobs says police had pulled Naves and his brother out of the building by the time firefighters arrived to find the house fully engulfed in flames. Naves' brother, whose name isn't being released at this point, has been taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

The county fire marshal is investigating but early indications are that the fire may have started in the kitchen.

HALIQUIPPA — A western Pennsylvania hospital must prove it is financially fit by noon today to stay open or state regulators say they will shut it down.The state Health Department last week banned the 96-bed Commonwealth Medical Center in Aliquippa from accepting new patients. The state says the for-profit hospital's financial problems are putting patients' health and safety at risk. Among other things, the hospital faced a natural gas shut off notice and was low on supplies needed to perform some blood tests.

PITTSBURGH — Now that the Supreme Court has declined to block the retrial of celebrity pathologist Cyril Wecht, his attorneys will ask a federal judge in Pittsburgh for a dismissal.Wecht is accused of using his former Allegheny County coroner's staff and equipment to benefit his lucrative private practice.Wecht's attorneys are scheduled Wednesday to file a motion claiming the government doesn't have enough evidence to take the theft and fraud charges to trial again.Wecht's first trial on 41 counts ended in a hung jury earlier this year.A new trial date won't be set until the new judge decides on the defense motion.
