No. 13 North Catholic loses to No. 4 West Mifflin in WPIAL softball first round
A steal of home and consecutive bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the sixth inning sent West Mifflin past North Catholic 9-6 in Monday’s WPIAL softball tournament opener.
The No. 13 Trojanettes briefly took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Alanna McEnaney hit a grand slam after three straight singles loaded the bases. Clare Kotwica scored on a double steal shortly after, and Kennedy Brown drove in Nicole Paschel on a bunt single.
But N.C. couldn’t hold on against the Class 4A fourth seed, and West Mifflin advances to the quarterfinals to take on No. 5 Blackhawk, a 14-4 winner over Western Beaver.
Brown finished 2-for-4 with an RBI from the top of the lineup, as North Catholic collected nine hits. Kotwica doubled, as well. Brown pitched all six innings, striking out 11 but allowing eight walks, seven hits and seven earned runs.
