College roundup: Grove City lacrosse teams knocked out in NCAA Division III tournaments
Grove City women’s lacrosse’s season came to an end Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Butler grad Tori Stevenson had two assists in a 15-5 loss to John Carroll. Seneca Valley product Elyse Kiggins made four saves in 45 minutes in the cage, but JCU scored 11 straight goals to take an 11-1 lead in the second quarter.
Jess Robinette and Gwen Shilling paced GCC with two goals each.
Stevenson, a sophomore, finished with 27 goals and 11 assists this season, while Kiggins, a senior, finished with a .403 save percentage and 9.61 goals allowed per game while going 11-6.
No. 6 Millersville beat Slippery Rock baseball 2-0 Wednesday night in the first round of the PSAC Tournament.
The Rock (31-19) are knocked out, despite drawing eight walks and recording five hits. They stranded 14 runners on base. Robert Herr was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Starter Nate Malak had a no-hitter through four innings before giving up two runs and a hit in the fifth. Mark Wilbur relieved him and didn’t allow a run after entering with one out in the fifth.
The Wolverines men’s lacrosse team was knocked out of the NCAA D-III tournament in Saturday’s second round, losing to No. 14 Christopher Newport 16-14.
Stewart McClain and Sawyer Strong led GCC with three goals apiece. Grove City had advanced to the second round after thumping Albion 18-3 in Wednesday’s first round.
The 7-0 Butler County Community College men’s golf team will play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Region 20 tournament Monday and Tuesday.
The Pioneers can qualify for the NCJAA Division III national championships with a win over four other schools.
