High school roundup: Karns City softball no-hits Forest; Mars baseball wins on walk-off

Karns City bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Moniteau with a comfortable 12-0 win in five innings over Forest on Wednesday evening.

Abigail Dunlap and Lyrik Reed combined to throw a no-hitter, with Dunlap striking out eight in three innings and Reed four in two innings. Reed also went 1-for-1 with a steal and two runs scored, while Dunlap was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Gremlins (9-7, 6-2 KSAC) needed just seven hits to produce a dozen runs, with Ronni Radaker and Addison Burrows reaching home twice.

Shaler 5, Knoch 0 — The Knights (17-3, 12-0 Section 1-4A) will head into the WPIAL playoffs on a two-game mini-skid after a 17-game winning streak ended this week.

Taylor London two-hit Knoch, with Emersyn Jones and Alena Tekely recording the only base knocks.

Slippery Rock 10, Franklin 0 (6 inn.) — Joslyn Korcok fired six shutout innings, punching out six while scattering four hits to lead the Rockets (3-9) to the win. She also doubled during a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in a run.

Grace Greer (2-for-4) doubled and scored twice, and Belle Miller (2-for-2) reached home three times and drove in a run.

Greensburg Salem 5, Freeport 0 — Grace Palko went 2-for-3 and doubled, but the Yellowjackets (4-12, 1-10 Section 1-4A) mustered just one other hit. Ali Smith threw four scoreless innings of relief, fanning five.

Montour 12, Mars 1 (5 inn.) — Laura Craska went 1-for-2 with a run and stolen base, and Sophia Soltis (1-for-2) tripled and drove in Craska. The Planets end the season 3-17 (2-10 Section 1-5A).

Hempfield Area 1, Seneca Valley 0 — The Raiders’ seven-game win streak came to an end despite a one-hit performance by Lexie Hames. Claire Mitchell doubled to start the bottom of the first, then scored on an error by SV (15-3, 13-3 Section 1-6A).

Union/A-C Valley 8, Keystone 4 — An error, sacrifice fly and two-RBI single in the top of the sixth proved the difference for the Falcon Knights (6-8). Lillian Hayden (3-for-4) doubled and scored, and Brianna Anthony (2-for-4) scored twice in the victory.

Baseball

Mars beat Shaler on a walk-off error to close out the regular season with a 6-5 home win Wednesday.

Danny Murray hit a grounder to second, but the play was botched and Grady Spiegle scored from second. Spiegle finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hayden Reisinger led the Planets (8-10, 4-6 Section 3-5A) with three RBIs on a 1-for-2 day.

Braden Schmitt got the win in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Karns City 17, North Clarion 0 (4 inn.) Colton Christie fired a four-inning no-hitter, striking out five against a lone walk. He also scored a run in one of his three plate appearances.

Mason Sherwin (3-for-3) had one of three Gremlins (10-5, 5-3 KSAC) doubles, scored four runs and drove in two more. Brock Dittman (2-for-3) and Koen Williams (2-for-2) each had two runs and an RBI, and Adam Manuel (1-for-3), doubled, drove in two and scored twice.

Girls lacrosse

Mars defeated Shady Side Academy 18-2. No further details were available.

Boys volleyball

Andrew Slaughenhoup had nine kills and Mason McCall 14 assists, but Butler fell at home to Meadville in straight sets. The Bulldogs won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-20.

The Golden Tornado end the season 8-6.
