James A. Cowan, 90, of Butler, passed away Friday, May 2, 2025, at his residence.

Born July 20, 1934, in Brackenridge, Pa, he was a son of the late J. Richard Cowan and Margaret A. Walters Cowan.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean Conflict.

James was retired from Armco, where he was employed for 35 years as a crane operator.

He was a member of VFW Post 249 and American Legion Post 778, and he belonged to the Elks.

He was an avid golfer and he enjoyed NASCAR racing.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Reasinger, whom he married Nov. 19, 1998; one daughter, Christine Cowan, of Florida; two sons, Rev. Steven Asher, of Naples, Fla., and Mark Cowan and his wife, Kim, of East Butler; one stepdaughter, Jo Ellen Hunt, of Clearfield, Pa.; three stepsons, John Brunette and his wife, Christine, of Butler, Clair Woodel and his wife, Debbie, of Clearfield, Pa., and Boyd Smith and his wife, Sandy, of Florida; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, John “Boots” Butenshoen; and two brothers, Richard Cowan and David Cowan.

COWAN — There will be no visitation, and services will be private for James A. Cowan, who died Friday, May 2, 2025.
