Off-year election draws much attention
For an off-year election cycle, electoral races in Butler County saw a fair share of attention in 2019.
The race receiving the most attention was the Court of Common Pleas judge seat. William “Wink” Robinson won both the Republican and Democratic nominations in a heated primary. Jennifer Gilliland-Vanasdale came just short of the Democratic bid and eventually launched a write-in campaign. Robinson won the general election.
Other notable races included a hotly contested, nine-candidate Mars Area School Board race and a Butler Area School Board race that saw the board’s president voted out of office.
Winners in Mars were Megan Lenz, Sallie Wick, Kevin Hagen, Anthony DePretis and John Kennedy.
Winners in Butler were Jennifer Cummings, Mary Waggoner, Tom Harrison, Jennifer Daniels-Wells and Bill Halle.
Voters also elected a new prothonotary, Kelly Ferrari, and a new state representative, Marci Mustello.
Butler County’s Bureau of Elections also experienced a shift in 2019 to paper voting machines. As counties statewide transitioned to the old-school technology, Butler County served as an early adopter for the western region.
