Senior centers get new operating group

Butler County’s senior centers are under new management.

The Nutrition Group of West Newton in Westmoreland County on Tuesday began operating all seven centers and three satellite locations under a $399,396 contract, which ends June 30, 2015.

Beth Herold, county Area Agency on Aging administrator, said the company will expand staff and enhance programming at the centers.

The Lutheran Service Society formerly ran the centers. The county paid nearly $326,000 during the 2013-14 fiscal year for that service, according to county controller records.

Herold said the county this year sought proposals to run the centers seeking the best rate and service.

“We wanted to rejuvenate and revitalize our senior centers,” she said.

The Lutheran society submitted the second lowest proposal, which was $38,000 higher than the Nutrition Group’s offer.

A third offer was withdrawn.

No county money pays for the service since a state grant funds it.

The centers are in Butler, Chicora, Cranberry Township, Evans City, Mars, Slippery Rock and Zelienople.

The satellites are in Cabot, Mt. Chestnut and West Sunbury.
